Viking Valkyrie Costume – Do You Fancy Being A Chooser Of The Slain And Part Time Bar Wench ?

This costume for women is inspired by the Valkyrie, figures out of Viking mythology. She was a very important figure and essentially was a symbolism of death in battle. If a Valkyrie turned up then you should start getting worried.

Although she looks far more pleasant on the eye than the normal death figure that is used in movies and literature, her role was to escort the slain heroes to Valhalla (or the hall of the slain – the afterlife). Apparently Valkyries only selected heroes to die. The heroes would be welcomed into Valhalla, where they were supposed to have a pretty good time, drinking and generally carousing for eternity.

True to the nature of the industrious Scandinavian peoples, when a Valkyrie was not escorting heroes to the afterworld, she was a part time bar maid (or should that be bar wench). She used to serve mead in Valhalla, to Odin the king of the gods according to Norse mythology.

In original texts (sagas) and modern interpretations (such as the flight of the Valkyrie) of these mythological figures, they are typically portrayed as attractive, young women. Maybe this was to encourage slain male heroes to join them and make the journey from life to death. Research into the origins of mythology suggests that the Valkyrie has changed with time. They originally did have a more menacing demeanor (much like the standard figure of death) but this has changed to be more  appealing and human like.

The Valkyrie costume on display here has taken it’s inspiration from the classical depictions of the mythical figure and thrown in a few modern touches to make it sexy and contemporary.

In terms of the classic elements, the silver winged headpiece, cape, shoulder guards and silver gauntlets mark her out as a mythical creature that can fly. The silver and purple half top and short skirt give it a modern and sexy look.
