Valhalla Vixen Costume – A Costume Fit For An Opera
This Valhalla vixen costume would be an original and attractive costume for your next Halloween party.
It is inspired by the Valkyries of Norse mythology as they were interpreted in the Wagner opera by Der Ring des Nibelungen (actually 4 operas in the whole piece).
It actually looks more like a Valkyrie than the Valkyrie costume featured here in my opinion. However this is if you believe in Wagner’s interpretation.
Wagner’s interpretation stressed strong Germanic styles, like the braided blond hair (which doesn’t come with the costume – you would either have to braid your own hair or get a wig). Also the headpiece which is like a winged crown that is reminiscent of contemporary pictures of Valkyries during Wagner’s time. The corset also has a German look to it much like a Fraulein serving at a beer festival.
However if you look at pictures of Valkyries by artists dating back hundreds of years you can see that these choosers of the Slain have evolved. They were initially horrible creatures that you might expect to meet when close to death. They have evolved into beautiful women over the years which is no bad thing I guess if you have just been killed in battle.
The Valkyrie ushered or guided the dead of battle to Valhalla, the Hall of the Slain. This was quite a good place apparently and was effectively the Norse version of Heaven. Although you had to be brave in battle to get to Valhalla which I guess sums up the precarious and fraught existence that people had in those times.
So the Valhalla vixen costume is a type of viking costume crossed with the outfit you might see in a Wagner opera. That’s quite a combination and is sure to make a great impression at a party.
Another thing that should also be noted about Valhalla and Valkyries is that once the heroes had made it to the Hall of the Slain they were served by the Valkyries. They could drink beer, carouse and generally act without a care in the world.
So you could say that the Valkyries might have two costumes. The first is the winged variety that she wears on the battle field and the second is her serving gear. I would say this costume is the one she might wear in Valhalla to do the serving. Hence the name Valhalla vixen costume.
The costume consists of a striking ivory colored dress, a black waist hugging corset bodice with gold ruffle trim and a sparkling metallic bust. Added to this is a sheer skirt overlay and elegant shoulder drapes. The finishing touch is the winged headpiece straight out of Norse mythology. Try the costume on for size this Halloween.
