Viking society is often portrayed as a patriarchal and male dominated society. This may have been true to some extent but it may also be because many of the tales and legends of the culture that were passed down deal with fighting, war and epic struggles – typically male occupations.

Women no doubt had an important role to play in the society if it is true that most of the men would be off fighting and sailing to far flung lands all the time but some how they did not get as much of a mention.

However, female gods and their entourage did get mentioned in Viking or Norse literature.

This article will cover the female viking costume, including depictions of female gods. What it was probably like and what you can get as a costume for Halloween or a fancy dress party.

Viking women probably wore plain but warm clothing. Maybe a tunic that covered the arms and legs. Animal furs probably kept them warm. Footwear was probably also fashioned from animal skin and treated.

This sort of outfit probably wouldn’t be something you would want to wear at a party. It wouldn’t really stand out so costume makers have used a bit of creative license to make more imaginative and fun female viking costumes. Here are a few examples.

This is a female viking warrior costume. Whether women fought in battle is hard to establish but maybe this is what they might have worn. Or maybe it it just a sexy dress with a few viking touches thrown in to make the theme easy to identify. You decide ?

The viking vixen costume may bear little resemblance to a real world costume but it is mainly aimed to look good and have a few things that might look like a viking. So the horn helmet, sword and arm gauntlets say “I’m a Viking”. The short skirt, tight corset, knee length boots and choker say “I’m a vixen”

Funny or Silly Viking costumes for women

The perky viking is a costume that could only be described as flirty and fun. The key elements to the costume are a cow horn helmet and dress with extremely pointy bosom. (no doubt inspired by some of Madonnas costumes in the 90’s) This is meant to be fun I would suggest but also reminds me of a character out of Asterix after they have taken some magic potion (Asterix’s girlfriend or such like). Everything springing to attention so to speak.

Elegant Viking Princess Costume

This is a truly beautiful costume. I’m not sure what it has to do with Vikings but I guess if there was a Viking princess she would be dressed up to look fine. And this costume doesn’t disappoint in terms of fineness.

It comes with a long ivory colored skirt and matching arm gauntlets. A crimson bodice completes the look. For accessories, a Viking headpiece, replete with small horns and a long gold and fur lined cape make this a truly stunning look.
