Fancy Being A Sea Faring Norseman For Halloween ?
An outfit that will always get some attention is a Viking costume. It may not be the first one that springs to your mind for Halloween or a fancy dress party but it certainly is distinctive.
No one will be left guessing as to who or what you are. The distinctive look of course is the helmet. The old pudding bowl helmet with the cow horns on each side is famous and immediately recognizable (despite the historical accuracy). Whether you are going as Hagar the Horrible or Eric the Red, you need the helmet. But there is more to the Viking than just a helmet.

Vikings are often described as pirates, warriors or raiders and this means they are usually armed with a shield and sword. It might even be a battle axe. They are dressed for battle and hardship as they make their way across treacherous, cold seas and descend of unsuspecting villages.
Typically a Viking warrior or raider would wear a chain mail under a heavy duty tunic. The chain mail for battle and the tunic for the sea voyages. They may use animal fur as part of their dress to keep warm on the sea journeys and even on land. Of course, Vikings hailed from the Scandinavian or Nordic territories that are high in the northern hemisphere and thus temperatures would be cold, hence the look.
And this look can be recreated with a modern day fancy dress or Halloween costume. Much of the items described above are modernized, so expect faux fur and plastic shield and sword but other than that, you can dress as a Viking.
And for the ladies, there are viking costumes too. Again, these costumes tend to range from genuine copies of the male outfits with a skirt or dress instead of a tunic to give a bit more femininity to the look. And the helmet and sword of course. On the opposite end, are the sexy outfits that have some elements of the viking look to them but are more about body hugging clothing and short skirts. These costumes are really just a bit of fun and designed to get maximum attention.

Background Behind the Viking
Vikings were sea traveling people that were based in Norse land (current day Scandinavia). Their distinctive long boats carried them far and wide. Their activities were varied when they eventually reaching dry land. You might call them opportunists. If they could trade with people they did. If they could settle in some places they would set up new villages and settlements. They would even raid and kill the locals if there was a need for it. In effect they colonized large parts of northern western Europe and even had settlements on the North American continent through these activities.
They had their own traditions and religion and some of these cultural influences are found in parts of Britain, Ireland and of course the Scandinavian countries today. There time was up when Christianity took hold in Europe and Scandinavia.
There was a revival of all things Viking in Victorian times. Much of the stereotypes of the Viking look where cemented in this revival whether they were true or otherwise. Their traditions and religion were also romanticized in literature and music, in particular the operas of Wagner (flight of the Valkyrie). The Victorian revival of Vikings is thought to be responsible for the interest that still exists today in Viking culture. Films and books constantly pop up along the same theme that was initially described by the Victorians. Why the revival sprang up is not clear but maybe it was a harking back to a simpler time and a psychological antidote the the heavy and soulless industrialization of Europe that was gathering pace during this period.
